VBS Planners Meeting Notes From May 9

Overview
Our vacation Bible school will complement our theme for MWLTC this year. In our VBS, we will be going on a Mystery Journey with the help of Scooby Doo, or some alternative spelling and character. Scooby is always afraid. We will learn that the Mystery of our journey is faith, and that when we have faith, we can be brave and trust in God, we can choose to obey God, and we can serve others to encourage them to serve God. Scooby will be used to introduce the idea of each day through drama in the initial gathering. Students will then enjoy classes appropriate to their ages on Bible Characters who trusted God, obeyed God, and shared the news about God. Then we desire to transition to a special journey each day to a country (one of our classrooms) set up to represent a country in which our congregation does mission work. Our students will not only learn about missionaries and their culture they serve, but also be inspired to become missionaries themselves – even when they go home, to their neighborhood or to school.

Suggestions From May 9 Meeting
Present: Rusty Maynard, David Pollard, Walt & Shirley McIndoo, Kim McNeill, Tracy Shaffer, Bonny Peterson & Susan Melcher.  Helping but not available for this meeting: Kimberly Maynard and Tony & Melody Ayres.

This group is primarily interested in the curriculum, classes, and activities. Another group will need to work on food concerns and other needs.

The idea of the Journey of Faith with Scooby was well received. Also,  including a transition to visit a mission field each day was also exciting.  Assuming we use rooms 100-102 for the Mission Field destinations, we only will have 114 for Adults.  Walt volunteered to work on the adult curriculum.

Room solutions (we think we will use every room in the building this year): We could take the library table out of the library to make another small room or use the coat closet as a room in a pinch.  Could we use tents in the main areas for the kids to cluster in and get a feel for traveling? (Nature Party in tents). Could be in the gym or some other area. Not only give a feel for travel – but can help with management as well.

Craft Suggestion: Packing a suitcase activity. The placemat idea the Ayres are developing was also well received as an activity and a way to help parents be informed and included in the lessons.

Bible Stories Discussion: The curriculum chart proposals works well with themes and connections, but there was discussion about using a variety of Bible stories. Joseph is a main character in Genesis, and I leaned heavily on him in our stories. However, we did the life of Joseph within recent memory for a VBS. It was proposed that we use the life of Moses instead, which the group believes will flow into the Trust,  Obey, and Share the News framework.  Several in the group took it as an item to work on for the next meeting.

Next Meeting:  May 23, 6:00-6:50.

A bunch of kids and some awesome adults pitched in to help prepare, serve, and honor our fabulous volunteers. Thanks everyone!
